Streak climbs to eight as Spurs spoil Memphis homestand, 116-103.
Kawhi Leonard iced this road victory for the Spurs. |
An early dazzling reverse dunk by Kawhi on the baseline wowed the crowd, as did the nasty collision of Mike Conley crashing into Rudy Gay (Conley called for a charging foul), and many more tough exchanges followed. Kawhi Leonard wobbled in the paint after a fierce block by Marc Gasol, whose 26 points and 12 rebounds led Memphis. His brother, Pau, got his own licks in, making a nice 3PTer after a pick-and-pop play with Leonard. Seeing the two Gasol brothers go at it was also satisfying, but it was Joakim Noah dominating the boards with 17 rebounds (which is becoming a nice trend). Leonard would get his revenge, icing the game at the free throw line, driving hard to the basket and making most of his layups with the foul.
Rudy Gay sparked the Spurs early yet again, finishing with 19 points after a trio of moves: two threes, and an ISO jumper over rookie Jaren Jackson, Jr (16 points, 9 rebounds, 2 blocks). Kawhi Leonard's defense along with Avery Bradley poked the ball free time and time again, hounding Mike Conley (12 points, 7 assists). The Spurs won every quarter except the second, pulling away 35-28 in the final period to ultimately win big.
Patty Mills scored 22 points, starting 3-3 from long range, stopping at six made from the field. Other moments included a steal by Iman Shumpert, leading to O'Quinn's ferocious slam. The Spurs went up 85-79 after Kawhi's trademark fadeaway jumper and a brutal dunk over point guard Shelvin Mack. Memphis, powered by the home crowd, would tie the game after a three-pointer by Marc Gasol, but a steal by Bradley led to Mills hitting from deep. Pau would block his brother for the pull-up mid range shot by O'Quinn, then Pau would throw a dunk down through the net, which Patty would barely touch with his sixth death blow from deep.
The Grizzlies had awful turnovers inside during crunch time, which turned out to be the difference. Mike Conley did his best, making a tough layup over Noah's long arms, but it was not enough.
Leonard finished with 33 points with 3 steals, as the Spurs mounted a 13-5 run to end the second quarter, then again with a 13-4 run midway through the third quarter. Garrett Temple went 2-9 this time around.
